The Spectrum Theme; a stunning new bespoke multi-tone paint finish developed and applied by the world-class paint technicians at McLaren Special
Operations (MSO), McLaren's in-house bespoke atelier service, and offered exclusively on the new 750S -McLaren's lightest and most powerful seriesproduction supercar.
Developed over a six-month period, creating and perfecting the Spectrum Theme presented unique challenges for MSO's vastly experienced team. Requiring
the development of new techniques to apply and taking over 370 hours of workshop time to paint, the Spectrum Theme introduces a new generation of
McLaren paint specialism and offers customers something truly unique and ground-breaking.
Spectrum is a theme more technical than anything MSO has developed before it, sharing its philosophy with the far-reaching technical changes introduced on
750S. Separate shades of colour create a tonal shift defined by precision craftsmanship. To the naked eye, the close bunching of the colours produces an
illusion of light to dark within each individual stripe. The shifting tone gives a sense of speed and acceleration, even when the 750S is perfectly still.
Spectrum is presented in three variants; Spectrum Blue, Spectrum Grey and Spectrum Orange, but they are just the starting point. The colourways can be
combined with further MSO bespoke personalisation, such as vibrantly coloured Leather, a Bespoke Dedication Plaque and Bespoke Painted Extended Visual
Carbon Fibre Sills that feature hand-painted Spectrum graded effect MSO logos. At the behest of customers, Spectrum can also be offered in unique
colourways, designed and delivered by MSO.
Nearly every shade of colour within the spectrum requires formulation of an entirely new paint, blending just the right amount of light and dark tone to create a
coherent shift. There is no fixed formula, every Spectrum Theme demanding bespoke mixes of these blends to achieve the desired outcome.
Each Spectrum Theme uses seven different colours. The front end of the car is uniformly finished in the lightest shade until a point midway through the door.
From here, five stripes cascade from the pillar to the door sill where they flare out, requiring meticulous attention to detail to perfect. MSO technicians spent a
significant amount of time during development of the Spectrum Theme learning how to correctly place the spectrum lines, considering the shut lines and
intricate aerodynamic sculpting of the dihedral doors.
At the rear, the Spectrum Theme 750S incorporates a touch from the popular Velocity Theme also offered by MSO. The seventh paint shade is not a solid
stripe, but a gentle Velocity fade that wraps around the rear of the 750S. Blue grades from Spectrum Blue to Metallic Aurora Blue. While the Orange theme
begins with Spectrum Orange and builds to a rich potent Gamma Red Metallic. The Grey variant shifts from Spectrum Grey to Metallic Meteorite Grey. And as
a final flourish, the underside of the Active Rear Wing of the 750S can be finished in a contrasting colour.
